AI news stories

  1. Intel unveils new AI chip to compete with Nvidia and AMD

Intel has unveiled several new computer chips, including the Gaudi3, designed for generative AI software, to compete with Nvidia and AMD in the AI hardware market. Gaudi3, set to launch next year, aims to challenge Nvidia's H100 and AMD's forthcoming MI300X in powering large AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Since acquiring Habana Labs in 2019, Intel has developed the Gaudi chips, with Gaudi2 being featured at the launch event.

  2. Spotify confirms test of prompt-based AI playlists feature

Spotify is testing an "AI playlists" feature, allowing users to create playlists using AI prompts. This feature, found in the Spotify app's "Your Library" tab, lets users type or choose prompts to generate playlists, which can be customized by removing songs. Initially spotted in a TikTok video, it was first reported by TechCrunch in October but not confirmed by Spotify until now. The company has been integrating AI in various ways, including an AI DJ and potential applications in podcast summarization and audio ad creation. Spotify hasn't announced a public release date for the AI playlists feature, currently labeling it as a test.

  3. H&R Block launches AI tax filing assistant

H&R Block has launched AI Tax Assist, a new AI chatbot integrated into its paid DIY tax software, to answer tax-related questions and guide users through the filing process. This tool allows users to get detailed information about tax rules, exemptions, and specific scenarios like deductions for gig workers. H&R Block emphasizes transparency by informing users about the AI's involvement and plans to add AI-powered personalized advice. Developed with OpenAI and Microsoft, and trained exclusively on H&R Block's tax law library, AI Tax Assist aims to replicate human accountant interactions. It's available in subscription tiers starting at $35, with a focus on accuracy and user trust, backed by a team monitoring the AI for correct performance.

  4. Healthcare providers to join US plan to manage AI risks - White House

Today, the White House announced that 28 healthcare companies, including CVS Health, have joined President Biden's initiative to responsibly develop artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. This initiative, which follows participation from AI leaders like Google and OpenAI, aims to ensure AI safety in healthcare. The move includes a commitment to avoid biases in AI, improve health equity, access, affordability, and reduce clinician burnout, aligning with Biden's October executive order for AI safety testing and government review before public release.

  5. DeepMind AI outdoes human mathematicians on unsolved problem

DeepMind's AI system, FunSearch, has achieved a significant breakthrough in combinatorics, surpassing human mathematicians in solving problems inspired by the card game Set. This marks the first instance of an AI based on large language models outperforming human knowledge in mathematics. FunSearch generates and evaluates computer programs to find new solutions, notably advancing the lower bound in the 'cap set problem' related to the game. Highlighting a new era of human-AI collaboration, FunSearch's transparency allows mathematicians to learn from its programming methods, enhancing rather than replacing human expertise.
